The Dorgan Lab at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UT MSI) is excited to announce open positions for graduate students, postdocs, and a post-BS level technician. We recently moved to UT MSI and are actively recruiting motivated individuals to join our research team.
About the Lab:
Research in the Dorgan Lab integrates sediment ecology, biomechanics, and the behavior, morphology, and physiology of invertebrates. Our work uses interdisciplinary approaches, incorporating engineering theory and methodologies while also focusing on developing new instrumentation to advance the study of invertebrate biology. The lab’s research is ideal for individuals who are passionate about combining biology with quantitative and technical skills to solve complex scientific problems.
What We’re Looking For:
We are seeking enthusiastic candidates with:
- A strong background in biology or marine science, with research experience (preferably working with invertebrates).
- Quantitative skills, including programming experience in Matlab, R, or Arduino (though this is not a strict requirement).
- Expertise in other scientific disciplines (e.g., math, physics/engineering, geology) is highly desirable.
- Additional technical skills (e.g., workshop experience, electronics), creative writing, or arts backgrounds are also valued.
We aim to create an inclusive and interdisciplinary team where diverse perspectives contribute to innovative science.
Available Positions:
Graduate Students:
- Engage in interdisciplinary research combining biomechanics, sediment ecology, and invertebrate biology.
- Collaborate with a diverse lab group and develop new instrumentation.
- Ideal candidates will have strong research backgrounds and a passion for quantitative biology and invertebrate studies.
Postdoctoral Researchers:
- Lead independent research projects in sediment ecology and biomechanics.
- Collaborate on multidisciplinary projects and supervise students.
- Candidates with experience in programming, engineering, or instrumentation development are encouraged to apply.
Post-BS Level Technician:
- Provide technical support for research projects in sediment ecology and biomechanics.
- Assist in the development of new instruments and technologies for biological research.
- Candidates with hands-on skills in electronics, programming, and lab work are preferred.
How to Apply:
